Our client wanted to create a streamlined transit corridor between Denmark and Germany with the upcoming Fehmarn tunnel, set to open in 2029. They needed a future-proof payment station to ensure smooth toll collection and efficient passage for all transport modes. The goal was to combine cost-effectiveness with periodic customs at the border crossing.
In just three months, we at Kopenhagen Konsulting crafted an overall design, working closely with the responsible organization and management. We defined design principles, gathered operational requirements, and investigated how modern toll technology could work with border control on both sides of the payment facility. The solution covered not just the physical framework but also recommended tech for identification, classification, and traffic management. This was crucial for handling the expected traffic load when the Fehmarn Belt opens. Thanks to our efforts, the client made a management decision on the design and began preparing for public tendering.
