What drives innovation?
Innovative solutions, and the employees that come up with them, are sought-after in all organizations today. It is widely acknowledged that innovation is one of the main driving factors to ensure long-term success of an organization.
We believe in flat organizational structures and nurturing support systems, as well as giving opportunities for self-organizing, self-selecting and autonomous practices. In our opinion, these are all positive factors, if you want to obtain, retain and develop innovative out-of-the-box-thinking employees. Many companies are still organized by legacy in classical hierarchies and operate from old-school understandings of what fosters and drives innovation – money, ambition and pressure.
There is a faulty premise to these approaches and especially the first (money) has been outright disproven, where an MIT study has shown that monetary incentives directly hinders the type of thinking required for employees to come up with innovative solutions. In addition, recent research has shown that hierarchical boundaries can be a hinderance in creating an environment, where innovation is able to flourish.
Out with the old, in with the new!
So perhaps it is time to do away with some of the old ways of doing things in organizations. Give employees flat organizational structures and the extensive support-systems (i.e. peer sponsor management) that they need. Perhaps it is time, that we cast away the notion of money as the ultimate motivator, and instead focus on giving employees more autonomy over their time, tasks and projects.
Thereby providing them with a higher sense of purpose – all factors that we believe to be crucial in creating and maintaining innovative and creative environments. Not only for the sake of your employees, but also for the long-term success of your organization.
